These reels also feature a free spool lever, and comfortable soft grip counter-balanced handles. The 309M and 209M have a graphite composite rod clamp.

Reliable Reel for Bottom Fishing
Strengths: Reliability, durability, line capacity, relatively inexpensive.
Weakness: Weight a little heavy for its size.
I first used this reel as a rental on day-long bottom fishing trip.
Reel worked well all day long and was very easy to use right from first time.
Compared it to the Penn 9M which is lighter but with much less line capacity.
Depends on your needs, but for deep water bottomfishing I would recommend the 209M model. Basic reel but well-made and reliable.

Finely Tired
Strengths: My 209 Penn has served me without fail for almoat 10 years
Weakness: The only part tha might be called week could be the springs, however that would not be fair. I use my reels almost every day. This spring has lasted for years.
My old faithfull 209 is ready for re conditioning. The Spring finely broke after ten years of hard continous use. I am sure that after repair it will serve me for another ten years. My reels see some extremely hard use in salt water fishing. I have caught many trophy salmon as well as oversized Sturgeon, and have never had a Drag failure. Well Built yet reasonable priced.
