Spalding outdoor basketball..purchased for approx. $12.95
Strengths: Very good grip.Seems to hold air well. Official wt. and size, when inflated fully. (I checked)
Weakness: "Beach ball-y" performance...shots toward basket are either a swish, or a miss. No cheapies of ball bouncing around rim, then dropping in. If it hits rim, "boing" it goes. Not like real b-ball.
I bought this for myself after getting my son, the indoor-outdoor Spalding composite, NBA model which is more expensive...$34.95 or so. That model is superb--like an official HS or NCAA ball. This one has that hollow sound when it bounces. Also does not have that "deep channel" feel that the better Spalding ball has. This might be good for a very young player who is learning to dribble, as it is...

This might be good for a very young player who is learning to dribble, as it is certainly very lively, but it doesn't have the "feel" that a better ball has. Or if you need to buy a lot of balls, and want to maximize the number of balls, e.g. for a rec program or to have multiple balls to practice shooting with, then it could be suitable. BTW, this is not a knock on Spalding, but rather indicative of this category of cheaper, single-layer basketballs. Of that ilk, this is as good or better than the competition, but a serious b-ball player would want a "double-layer", more expensive ball.

Great, inexpensive basketball
Strengths: Good grip, bouncy, stays inflated
Weakness: Synthetic material
My favorite low cost basketball. For a synthetic, it stays inflated and has a good feel to the surface. You will not lose your grip often. The ball is very responsive and bounces well.
